The ego trip blossoming and exploding into a bath of swoon, the wounded songs that vent and sigh with equal measure fronting deeper heartbreaks, the otherworldly melodies free-associating pop with some parallel reality. Much has been said about Brian Wilson’s so-called teenage symphony to God but only three things make it matter. It was the sparkplug for Sgt. Pepper; it relieved pop from expressing only the universal; and years later, it’s gotten even more astonishingly beautiful.
