George Clinton is the funkiest funkyman on the planet. OK, I give—the weirdest, at least. Ah, but the boil that that can bring things to. This is funk, yes, darkened, coarsened, thickened to psychedelic—uh, funkadelic, if you will—sludge, with guitars up the kazoo. The walls dividing pop when this came out—Us/Them, Rock/Funk, White/Black—had racial undercurrents. But because Eddie Hazel plays guitar like God, those walls came tumbling down whenever he did. Paraphrased, the question Clinton and Funkadelic would pop in 1978 went “Can A Funk Band Rock?” To which the answer was this pitch black manifesto from seven years back. To which the answer was fuck, yeah.
