♪ Written in Reverse (Spoon, 2010) ♪

It is that remarkable quirk that Spoon decide to put in their songs that makes them difficult to forget. Take for instance that funky intro of “Don’t You Evah”, or the staccato piano in “The Ghost of You Lingers”, or the symphony of the bass and drums in “The Way We Get By”. They stamp the unforgettable and keep the rhythm precise as always. In “Written in Reverse” the culprit is Britt Daniel’s electrifying aaaaaahhh in the third stanza, which sounds like Julian Casablancas but with a more soulful swagger. The song is rather steady, Spoon “playing enough notes” at full throttle, no smokes and mirrors, just like any fun song that gets better and better every listen. The way they really are.
