♪ Fables (The Dodos, 2009) ♪

The Dodos have always had the knack for simplicity, yet never in their simple arrangements have had a dull moment; instead, their songs shine in their honesty; the plain but graceful blend of acoustic guitar, drums, and vibraphone sounds effortlessly vigorous. In their music, a leaf falling is nothing different from a volcano erupting; actions are not defined by the meaning we ascribe to them. Everything is intrinsic, inherent to the codes of its universe. “Fables” echoes from within, an internal yearning for something unspeakable—too emotional to be put into words—yet we know it, we feel it when we hear it, because we are it. The strumming pattern insists all the way through, the drumbeats follow religiously, and the vibes stay close, complementing the affectionate words delivered like a breeze.
